FEDERAL/STATE/LOCAL GOALS
H. Jurgen Combs

Your school district has adopted curricula for the subjects taught within the district. In many cases, these guides are based on state guidelines which in turn may be based on national goals. As there is increasing demand for state wide testing, as well as national testing, we are going to see more standardization of the curriculum for your content area.

While the district will indicate through its curriculum guide and textbook adoption program the content you will cover, you still will have a certain latitude in deciding what to cover. For example, in American History, you may be expected to cover from the Civil War to the present. Obviously, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to cover all of this history during your term; you will thus make some value judgments on what to include and what to exclude - - this is part of the planning process.
